It always amazes me how much we don’t understand even some very common things we use all the time. The fact that tape is still developed by trial and error is almost unbelievable.

who cares how it works it works (farscythes aproach to science)
(suffice it to say i do not make the big bucks)
i am having a hard time thinking of something more boring than sitting around waiting for tape to fail.... not a job i could do (aside from not having the science know how)
glad someones doing it tho... duct tape is awesome

Opening doors are for chumps, the Duke boys went like 12 seasons without opening doors

I’ve come to the conclusion that...
... wait for it...
duct tape is overrated.
Gaffer tape is the shiznit. Sticks like crazy, but since it’s cloth-based tape it doesn’t have any vinyl to break down the adhesive and leave sticky residue on shit so it peels off cleanly.

it is crazy, one example in my life of us still not understanding something fully is hands, FUCKING HANDS! I had to have hand surgery and after that, talking with the physical therapist, he said we don’t yet fully understand the intricacies of human hands. Aren’t I fucking glad mine still works? Haha.

In the past year, I have discovered the following two tapes (due to having children). I have no idea what I did before this...it was just Scotch and Duct, occasionally gaffer or electrical :
1. Washi Tape — super light, often decorative, and used for temporary mounting of things on painted surfaces with no possibility of damage. Also good for wrapping gifts. Very easy to tear/remove.
2. Mavalus Tape — basically gaffer tape, but it leaves NO residue and can be reused several times. Expensive, but totally worth it. This is what you need for hanging birthday party decorations, posters, etc.

I mean, you don’t have to wait around until it fails, you could always do something else in the meantime

I like gaffer tape too. Although, in the AZ heat, the adhesive doesn’t hold if it gets too hot. I still haven’t found one that will hold up for really strong concentrations of temps. Some of the higher temp rated tapes smell really awful, too.

Are these available at regular hardware stores?

I agree with you on Gaffer tape, but not on duct tape. It's not overrated -- we just have no control over it's misuses.

You can add brains and several other organs to that list.

Hardware, maybe. Craft stores, definitely. Amazon, naturally.

There’s a surprising amount of that with regards to medicine and the human body. Like anesthesia...we have no clue how it works, just that it does, all through trial and error :o

but then you might miss the precise moment it fails
thats the exciting part!
(tbh in the article there was a line that said a good chunk of his day was spent waiting for tape to fail.. so thats what i went with)

But ask any doctor, and they all remember the ribald mnemonic to memorize the bones in the hand.

Also cats - the damn things live in our houses, and we don't seem to know all that much about them.

I want to know why cats can defy gravity and we can’t.

scary to think about the error part of those trials, haha. We need only look at medicine 25 to 1000 years ago and the type of shit they were doing.

an entire cat is definitely complex.
